Cane Creek Middle School is the first public middle school in Western North Carolina to have its own Lacrosse team. Our team has 14 players, 8 of which are new to the game and are being trained right now by our coach, Mr Hollingsworth.
The history of lacrosse is one of the oldest organized sports in North America. The origins of lacrosse trace all the way back to Native American traditions, in which the game was used in rituals, to settle disputes between tribes, and toughen young warriors for combat. The modern version of the game emerged in the early 1800s when a Canadian dentist, William George Beers, established rules and regulations. He also helped spread the game of lacrosse to universities and athletic clubs across North America.
Lacrosse is one of the fastest sports on two feet, players can launch the ball at speeds over 100 mph. Unlike many stick sports, lacrosse players don’t use their hands to catch the ball, throw, or carry the ball. All their actions must be done with the stick using a technique called “cradling.”
The stick that the players have to use has a small mesh or leather pocket at the end to hold and carry the ball. The pockets are precisely woven and customized for each player’s preference. Major League lacrosse games feature the “air gate”- a wild, leaping celebration after a big goal where players launch into the air kicking their legs out.
Why would you play Lacrosse? There are many reasons why someone would want to play lacrosse such as; there are many scholarships involved in any of the three levels, to learn teamwork, coordination, leadership skills, discipline and dedication or just for physical fitness. Lacrosse is an NCAA sport meaning both men and women can play and get scholarships.
Lack of scholarship opportunities has historically been an issue for emerging sports, but that is not the case for lacrosse as it continues to grow rapidly. With the medium roster sizes in the 30-40 player range, lacrosse has a higher percentage of players receiving scholarship money compared to many other NCAA sports.
Lacrosse is a dynamic sport with a rich history and a bright future. Its blend of athleticism, strategy, and teamwork captivates players and fans alike. Whether on the field or in the community, lacrosse fosters a sense of camaraderie and passion that transcends the game itself. As the sport continues to grow and evolve, it will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the world of athletics for generations to come.
